It’s been a while since I last posted about the progress of book 3 (Bonds That Break). I’ve been busy writing and have just hit the 40k word mark which I would guess puts me at more than half way done. I like to plan my books so by the time I get to writing, I have a good idea of where I am going and how the story progresses. I generally have a word document with a list of all the cool ideas I have had for the book and a pretty good idea of how the book will end. Then I outline (in pretty good detail) three chapters. Then I write those three chapters and use the list of ideas to outline the next three chapters. I find that if I outline more than that, that I change too many things while writing and my outline ends up changing anyway. This method gives me some structure as well as freedom to improvise and come up with things that surprise even myself. I’ve had several of those moments with this book and then I look back and wonder how I ever thought the outline worked without that idea.
By the way, I’m considering putting up the rough draft of chapter 1. Because Amazon get’s upset if their net searching bots find any large passages of text from books posted for free, I would need to post it with a password like I did with Unbound. Would anyone be interested in seeing an early version of the chapter or should I wait until it has been past an editor? I think it is pretty clean, but editors always find ways of making things better.
